Who doesn’t want to be popular?  It’s built into the human psyche to be loved and accepted.  The more people who love and accept us moves our perceived reputation up the invisible scale of being popular.  At least this is what we think.

We recently saw the Broadway production of Wicked.  I love the theatre, and this is by far my favorite.  Although I’ve only seen a handful of shows, the music, the talent, the set, the story – all play into my love for this musical.

Here is a sampling of one of my favorite scenes:

It is a fun song that makes us want to join in, however, we must realize this is not the scale the Lord would have us use in evaluating our success.  The opinions of others come and go.  They can be fraught with jealousy and competition.  Yet we all yearn to please those with whom we associate. But really there is only one opinion that matters – God’s.  Are we busy doing and saying the things that will bring Him glory, or have we become distracted with being “popular” by the standards others impose on us?

I’m not really sure why I’m writing all this – but I trust it has meaning to those who will read it.  I started down this trail because I noticed our most popular post of all time, which is nearly 10% of the total hits to our blog, is our Rainy Date Ideas post from May 2009.  We thought it would be good to offer it to you again, since it IS raining a lot around here these days.

What have you found to be a fun Rainy Date Idea?  Won’t you share it with us by scrolling down the page to the comment box?  Who knows?  It may be your idea that becomes someone else’s most popular date – Now there’s a good thing for which to be popular!

This is post #19 in The Ultimate Blog Challenge to post everyday in July.

Great post! I love and totally agree that the opinions of others come and go, while God’s is the only one that matter – awesome! Thanks for sharing and I’m glad I found you on the UBC!!!

Thanks for the great reminder that God’s opinion is what truly matters, Debi. And Wicked is my and my daughter’s favorite play too!!! 🙂

  3. What a lovely blog you have here Debi. I’m bookmarking and coming back again for more. I agree with what you saying about being popular – what is the price we’re wiling to pay for it. As for me, I’d rather be unpopular than not follow the Lord.

  4. Thanks again, Debi, for a great post. It has me starting to think about being popular in my marriage. I don’t want how we view each other even as husband and wife to be the most important thing. Sometimes in the most unpopular decisions that we make for the good of our marriage, God is most glorified.

You build strength by trusting your intuition which comes from God. I teach my children to trust what they hear, they don’t always need to follow the crowd.
