Close Friends

I love Scrabble.  Tom doesn’t.  Mostly because words are my friends, and he feels outnumbered when we play.  But we don’t play much anymore, which is sad.  Words could be Tom’s friends too, if he would just give them a chance.

He has a better relationship with numbers.  Me?  Not so much.  I don’t do numbers because they always have to be just right.  Get one off and the whole deal is over.  They seem too stuffy for me – too in your face.  I like words because there are several meanings for one word.  It’s not that way with numbers.  2 + 2 always equals 4.  Where’s the creativity in that? There’s no room for self-expression.

Tom can keep his numbers, and I’ll keep my words.  But what if…

…we could join the two into an amazing game perfectly suited to us and our close friends?  Hmm…

Scrabble Memories – a new game with a romantic twist!

Tonight we played a new version of Scrabble that we made up ouselves.  Here are the rules if you should choose to play:

  • Take all the Scrabble letters and place them face up on the table.
  • Light a couple of candles for ambiance.  🙂
  • Place the letters of your last name on the center of the board – however you choose as long as the center X is covered.

  • Give each player the points scored with your last name.  Remember the center X doubles the value of the word.  Since you are one – it simply makes sense you both get the points scored by using your last name.
  • Whoever is the oldest goes first.  Make a word using whatever letters you want providing they represent a romantic memory you both share AND it ties into your name.
  • The next player goes using whatever letters he/she wants as long as it is a romantic memory you both share.
  • Keep score of the points as you go.
  • The goal is to see if you can use all the letters – filling up the Scrabble board with lots of romantic memories.

Tonight – Tom won!  My “friends” were so happy he wanted to play they decided to jump on board adding their value to his numbers.  I didn’t have a chance.  But hey, I’m glad to see my friends are finally warming up to my best friend! I just hope my BFF is warming up to them.  I think letting him win is a good start, don’t you think?  😉  And just look at the memories we recounted!  A truly successful date night!

What special game ideas have you come up with in your years of marriage?  Won’t you share them with us?  We’d love to hear!

This is post #26 in The Ultimate Blog Challenge to post everyday in July.

not true, 2 + 2 may equal 4, however, there are many ways to reach the same result…
(3(12)- 5(4))/4=4 and on and on and on… see? like words, many descriptors for the same meaning.

Ah Seth! I can always leave it to you to prove a point with YOUR close friends. I’ll admit you have a way with numbers. However, the outcome is always the SAME 4! With words you can have a variety of different endings. I’ll defend my close friends anytime, anywhere and any place. Here’s three words for you – I love you!
(for those who don’t know, Seth is my favorite son-in-law.) 🙂

  2. J says:

2 + 2 = 4 only in base 10. When you use other bases, it will equal something different. (I learned this from friends with a math professor for the dad! This was their supper table discussion!!!!)

Oh my! I seemed to have stirred a hornets nest full of not angry hornets, but happy number crunchers. Thanks for commenting!
Debi – the one who loves WORDS. 🙂

As this is our first year of marrige you wont be surprised to hear my favourite game hasn’t worn off yet. Its called turning all the lights off on the way to bed and making Mark jump on the stairs. I get him every time and I do this several times a week. The laugh of it is he could turn the lights on from down stairs before he comes up, but he chooses not to, so I know he loves it too!

    • Debi Walter says:

Gina, this is so cute! Although I don’t know what you mean by “jump on the stairs.” Could you explain? Sounds hilarious!

  4. Lori says:

Love this idea, Debi – next date night, I’ll be getting the scrabble game out!

Rob and I play dominoes and Phase 10, but that’s about it… we haven’t adapted anything ‘fun’ or creative with the games.

    • Debi Walter says:

I forgot to mention all Proper Nouns are accepted. But they have to be one word only – no hyphenated words either. Have fun!

  5. Dolores Germain says:

I love to play scrabble but I gave my game to my favorite Daughter (in-law) That was a good thing to do. Now you see how creative she is. Love her!!!

  6. Calypso says:

    CUTE CUTE!!!
We will have to try this. My man is not much of a scrabble player but he is fiercely competitive… Now… where is that scrabble game???

  7. Laura says:

We love scrabble! We’ll have to try this one!

My boss is a CPA and when I told him I like numbers because 2 + 2 always equals 4 he said “not if you do it right!” LOL
