Pumpkin Carving Contest
This is sure to be a great way to sharpen your skills at romancing your spouse. 🙂 Here’s all you have to do to make this a great date and may become an annual tradition:
What You’ll Need:
- Two pumpkins
- Carving tools – grapefruit knife, paring knife, large spoon and petroleum jelly
- Tracing Paper
- Tape or Straight Pins
- Pattern
- Tea Light Candle
- Camera

Instructions:
- Allow your pumpkin to come to room temperature. Draw the outline of a six-sided lid on top of the pumpkin. Then draw a notch at the back to use as a guide for replacing the lid. Make the lid large enough to let you easily clean out the pumpkin. Instead of cutting a lid, you may wish to draw a round opening on the bottom of the pumpkin. With the bottom removed, the pumpkin can sit over a candle or a light.
- Cut out the lid or bottom opening with a saw or a knife. To cut out a lid, carve at an angle toward the pumpkin center. This creates a ledge to support the lid. To cut out a bottom opening cut straight into the base.
- Clean out the seeds and pulp with a spoon. Scrape the pulp from the area you plan to carve until the pumpkin wall is about 1 inch thick.

Once you have carved your romantic pumpkins–take a picture of both. Set them on a table and turn off all the lights in your room. Eat some fresh pumpkin pie, play your favorite music and enjoy the fruits of your labor in whatever way relaxes you most. 🙂

Ok, now what I really want to know is if you guys actually carved those pumpkins in the picture! Because they’re kind of amazing!
The last time we tried to carve pumpkins, we decided it was too much work…I think we might just decorate them this year.

Now that our kids are grown we haven’t done pumpkin carving in quite a while. Maybe we could have to this year if it weren’t for the fact that I’m on other side of the world from Jenni at the moment. Maybe next year!

Maybe you could do a virtual pumpkin carving by sending her romantic pictures of carved pumpkins you’ve found. Do a Google search–you’ll be amazed at the images people have done. So sorry your so far apart.

How fun is this? LOVE it! Now we expect to see the pumpkins you and Tom carve out posted on your web site sometime soon. We know they’ll be even LOVElier (pun intended). Back in the days when we were home on Halloween (Steve usually has a ministry event we’ve needed to go to in recent years), we used to carve out two pumpkins. One had a smily face carved out and one had a cross carved out with a light shining through. We wanted others to know that Christians have a lot to smile about. We were trying to redeem the darkness.
We always got some good comments from different people who came to the house. But yours could also bring a great set of comments. “Love Forever” can’t be advertised or lived out enough in today’s world. You and Tom do it well. God’s love is fun to advertise –even through the light of a pumpkin. Please know that Steve and I appreciate you both!!!
