Paying Attention To The Nudges

Nudges.

They are easy to miss if we’re not paying attention.

A couple of weeks ago, Tom and I were watching television, and saw a commercial for chocolate chip cookies. He commented how good those looked. (nudge)

I got up a few minutes later and threw together cookie dough, and in no time Tom was enjoying what his appetite was craving.

What a privilege to live this close to someone day in and day out, to hear their desires, dreams and cravings. And then to be able to assist in making them happen.

If you’re like me, I often miss the nudge because I’m preoccupied with other things, or I put it off and then forget. I’m posting this today as a reminder to listen to the nudges your spouse either knowingly or unknowingly sends your way. Do all you can to surprise them and you’ll bless them for doing so, but more so for paying attention to the nudge.

“nudges”, being mindful, intuitive, attentative – just paying attention …. ALL of these and 10+yrs of marriage, STILL none of it resonates with my husband. I compete with “technology” or he’s in his own little world.

Cindi, We live in a technology saturated world, and when it interferes with real life relationships it’s painful and hard to endure. We encourage you to ask your husband to seek help and counsel from someone you both respect. Marriage was never meant to play second best to the internet. We pray you are able to help him understand the desperate place your marriage is in.

Thank you, Deb. I wish I could say this was a pattern of mine, but I am getting better. Grateful for the lifetime commitment because I think it takes a lifetime to learn how to do marriage right.

  3. Spot on, Debi. It can also help to journal what we notice in our spouses’ preferences, to build a pattern that we may then anticipate to their benefit…and, hopefully, delight.
