A Fragrant Aroma – Listening

These “Fragrant Aroma” posts are intended to give you a glimpse into our lives and marriage in real time – this week to be exact.  And if I had to choose one word to describe our week it would be “listening.”

We have had our 4 year old granddaughter, Bristol, and our 2 year old granddaughter, Willow, staying with us all week.  They have been so much fun, and they love to talk – A LOT! 🙂 Their words are amazingly clear for as young as they are – and not only do they use lots of words they use lots of giggles.  This part of listening has been a total blast.

We have also spent lots of time this week listening to various friends as they shared with us heart to heart.  Some are facing life changing events, some have difficulties in their marriage, communication breakdowns or financial woes.  All they required was the listening ear of a friend and the listening ear of God, who hears them when they cry out to Him. Listening to their words and most of all their heart moved us deeply as we empathized with each one.

We spent more time listening to our grown children sharing with us news and events happening in their lives.  Our son is away with his wife for the first time since their honeymoon five years ago.  Our daughter in Atlanta shared good news of selling her homemade bagels to a local coffee shop.  And our youngest daughter shared about life in the hair salon where she is privileged to work.  Not to mention, we’ve also spent time this week listening to various politicians promising a better future.

But of all these voices we have listened to, there is Another to whom our ears must always be inclined to listen.  It is the voice of our Savior, Jesus Christ.  He is an ever present help in our time of need as well as for all of our friends who are facing challenging times.  He is listening to the giggles and joy of happy toddlers.  He is listening to the celebrations and life experiences of our children.  But most of all, He is listening to the silent prayers we are often unable to say out loud.  He knows us, and He cares for everything that delights us and concerns us.

So as we listen, we pray, knowing that a listening God is with us as we listen to others.  And what we hear, though difficult at times because of our love and care, is made easier to bear in light of the big picture of what God is doing through it all for His glory. Even if we can’t see the answer yet.

Who have you been listening to this week?

  1. Always listening to the “still small voice” . . . . . . . .

  2. Sharon O says:

oh may we pray that we listen to the voices that are healthy and good for us, may we also learn to listen more intensely and love more deeply and be available for those who cross our paths who just need our time. Lord help us to be available.
