The Thing About Sickness…

The thing about sickness is you never get a calendar update telling you it’s coming.

We just celebrated our youngest granddaughter’s birthday. It was so much fun with a Toy Story 2 theme.

Lots of laughter, hugs and photos were had. Unfortunately, lots of germs were present too.

That night our granddaughter had a fever. More sicknesses followed, with Tom succumbing on Tuesday night.

It has been a long week; I miss Tom when he’s sick. All normal plans cease, with rest and plenty of liquids on the agenda.

I’ve learned through the years what helps Tom recover best is caring for him in a way that helps him and not me.

It’s funny how early on in marriage my best attempts were fraught with what I would want him to do for me when I’m sick, not preferring him.

In 47 years I now know what helps him most is sleep, rest and certain foods that sound good in the moment, (this varies depending on the sickness.) This time I made chicken and dumplings. I must say this is one of our favorite comfort foods

How do you care for your spouse when sickness hits? The answer is crucial in how well your spouse feels loved in sickness and in health.

Oh, how I miss Randy being here and I’d continue to love and care for him through his sickness but I’m also rejoicing for him being in heaven. I’m thankful for the opportunity to hold his hand for about his last 7 hours on earth; even though he was he was unconscious. Whispering in his ear how much I loved him forever and always. I miss having him here with me so very much; especially lately. I’m drawing close to God as He’s my anchor. These last 3.5 months without him has seemed so long but forever blessed and grateful for the 47 beautiful years God gave us together.

Blessings to you, Debbie and Tom from Vickie
